Sony publishes an affordable digital audio workstation called ACID Music Studio, which is a fairly complete home recording studio that runs on PCs.Production
ACID Music Studio's layout is crisp and useable. The track list appears on the left, with a header for each audio and midi track. You can apply any settings and effects to the tracks. To the right of the track list is the main work area, which Sony calls the Timeline, where you arrange and edit all media associated with a project. Time runs on the x-axis and the tracks run along the y-axis.
The media files that you place on the timeline are called Events. The timeline has a transport toolbar that lets you control playback as if it were a CD player. Below the timeline is an Explorer tab that provides a view of your local file directory so that you can easily drag media files from your directory to the timeline. Another interesting window within the program is one that displays any video associated with a project. In order to select portions of media files to add to tracks as Events, there is a Chopper tab. The sections that you select within the Chopper tab can also be used to create new loops.
Mixer
ACID Music provides a lot of mixing features. Any project can have an unlimited number of audio tracks. You can mix audio tracks in two ways. From the audio track controls in the track list, you can adjust volume and panning for each track. There is also a Mixing Console that duplicates many of the track header features but in a more traditional mixer layout. From the Mixing Console, you can conduct advanced mixing of busses for Soft Synth, Sony's software synthesizer.
Effects
A software synthesizer, Soft Synth, is included to provide the sounds for midi tracks and input from a midi keyboard. ACID Music Studio provides a Plugin Manager tab where you can organize DirectX effects, VST plugins and ReWire devices.
Help & Support
Sony sells support plans to those who want to telephone or email the support department. Those without a paid support plan can avail themselves of an online knowledgebase, user forums and training. Software updates are also available online, as are PDF versions of product manuals.

Production
Expect tools and features to create tracks from scratch, such as beat and percussion sequencers as well as instrument and effects suites. There should be tools to combine, manipulate, modify, remove, refine and replace track elements and audio file attributes. You should be able to import and export a variety of file types and use plugins to achieve various functions and effects. Often, some of the software's mixer functions are duplicated in the main production area for convenience.
Mixer
Most DAWs have full-featured mixers that can record and edit audio, provide visuals of wave-forms and control equalization functions. At minimum, mixers should have controls that let you adjust the volume, and panning and effects plugins for multiple related tracks that you can route to submix busses. Mixer pan controls allow you to position sounds in various locations within the stereo soundscape. The mixer is also the place where you can compensate for any delay introduced into a track during recording.
Effects
Digital audio workstations contain effects such as guitar amplifier emulators and instrument synthesizers. You should also be able to adjust basic equalization effects with bass, middle and treble frequency controls, among other EQ plugins. Effects features also include control over mono and stereo processing, as well as the ability to add compression, reverb and other effects.
Help & Support
Audio production software should be helpful at every stage of production. Look for built-in help sections, how-to guides, tutorials, training videos, online manuals, FAQs, user forums and online correspondence with the manufacturer. The user forums are supportive.
Audio production software at entry-level prices is surprisingly good. These products contain sufficient functionality to keep you happy for quite a while before you'll start wishing for the extra features, plugins and effects that pro-level versions provide. Pick your entry-level product carefully, though, because these products are so feature rich that once you learn to use one, you are likely to maintain brand loyalty so that you don't have to learn a new complicated product.
